Same Day Dentistry: Toothache Treatment
If you are experiencing a toothache, you might need to undergo cavity treatment from the same day dentistry office. Toothaches vary in severity, depending on the extent of the cavity that causes it. Regardless of the severity of the pain, a quick visit to the dentist is necessary to fill the tooth. It is common knowledge that dental fillings are used to repair a tooth with cavities, but how exactly does it work?
Same day dentistry treatment for cavities
A cavity is a hole caused by tooth decay, a result of an accumulation of bacteria on the teeth. Without treatment, the decay will continue to spread and cause damage, which is when toothache eventually sets in. During the dental filling procedure, the dentist will clean the decay present in the cavity using a dental drill before placing the filling. Cleaning the decay stops further damage, but cannot reverse the damage to the tooth. This is when fillings are required.
The filling used for cavity treatment nowadays is made from composite resin. The filling replaces the missing area of the tooth structure. The composite material will be molded over the tooth to match the form and color of the existing teeth. Fillings restore the structure and strength of the tooth and stop the reoccurrence of decay into the now-vulnerable part of the tooth.
Applying the filling
The process begins after the dentist numbs the decayed tooth and the surrounding gums with a local anesthetic. The specific method used to apply the filling depends on the filling material selected. Composite resin is the most popular and allows for customization. They are also highly durable and can survive up to 15 years of use with proper oral care.
The composite resin is applied in paste form. After the application, the resin fills the cavity. Composites are placed in layers until the cavity is filled. After placing and shaping each layer, it is hardened with a unique ultraviolet light in a process known as photopolymerization, which is safe and highly effective. Once the composite is completely in place, the restored tooth will look and function like a natural tooth.
The importance of cavity treatment
If tooth decay damages a portion of the tooth structure, the cavity is usually painful and sensitive. The inner nerves could become exposed, and with the structural integrity of the tooth compromised, the tooth becomes vulnerable to infection. Even if the dentist cleans the decay inside the cavity completely, the hole will still be an issue if it is not filled. Cavity filling restores the tooth's functionality.
Fillings stop bacteria or plaque from accumulating inside the cavity. It also provides reinforcement for the tooth to prevent breakage or chipping. Without cavity treatment in same day dentistry, even small cavities can compromise the health of the tooth.
